Genital And Oral Herpes

Genital Herpes is a highly infectious sexually transmitted disease. It is most often caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-2. HSV-1 usually causes Oral Herpes. Less often however, HSV-1 does cause genital herpes infections through oral sexual contact. Genital sores caused by both the viruses look the same.

Genital herpes is spread through direct contact with an infected person. Sexual intercourse and oral sex are the most common methods of spreading genital herpes. Any type of skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, however, can also spread herpes.

The highest rate of infection for both male genital herpes and female genital herpes is seen among those with multiple sexual partners.

In male genital herpes or female genital herpes, one may also notice swelling, pain or itching around the genitals, possibly followed by painful red spots that may form small blisters. These blisters may burst to form open sores or ulcers, which then crust over and heal.

Many people with genital herpes report no symptoms, or have symptoms they don't recognize. Carriers may therefore transmit the disease without having any symptoms of active infection.
For others, the first symptoms of genital herpes may show up 2 to 21 days after coming into contact with the virus. The first episode of herpes is often the most severe. This is because the immune system has not had time to develop protective antibodies. This means the virus can multiply rapidly, causing significant symptoms.

Genital Herpes Symptoms

A genital herpes infection causes small blisters or ulcers (round areas of broken skin) on the genitals. Each blister or ulcer is typically only 1-3 millimeters in size. They tend to form in clusters. Usually the blisters form first and then open up to form ulcers.
Herpes infection may be painless, slightly tender, or very tender and painful.
In male genital herpes, sores or lesions usually appear on or around the penis.
In women, the lesions commonly occur inside the vagina.  They may cause discomfort or vaginal discharge. They often can only be noticed with a doctor's examination.
The ulcers or blisters may however, also be found anywhere around the genitals, and in and around the anus.
Some people develop other signs of herpes infection, particularly with the first episode. These include: fever, muscle aches, headaches, painful urination, painful passing of stools, swollen and tender lymph glands in the groin.
Some people experience pain or a tingling sensation in the area of the infection even before any blisters or ulcers can be seen. This is due to irritation and inflammation of the nerves. There are 100 different types of herpes viruses. 8 of these affect human-beings.

The Herpes Simplex Virus comprises of 2 types of DNA Viruses – Herpes Simplex Virus-1 and Herpes Simplex Virus-2.

The Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 usually causes oral cold sores. These are small blisters or lesions that form around the mouth. In about 20% of cases, the Herpes Simplex Virus Type-2 also causes oral cold sores. This may be caused by oral sex with a partner who has genital herpes.

HSV-2 causes genital lesions in 80% and oral lesions in 20% of cases.

The Herpes Simplex Virus is highly contagious. It may be transmitted through direct contact. HSV-1 spreads through respiratory droplets or direct exposure to infected saliva. HSV-2 is usually transmitted through genital contact. For transmission, contact must involve mucous membranes or damaged skin. Neonatal HSV Infection (in newborn babies) is acquired from the mother at birth.

The Herpes Simplex Virus may remain dormant for years, and then reactivate and result in an outbreak. The frequency of outbreaks, their severity and triggering factors differ from person to person.

Oral Herpes

Oral Herpes is an infection caused by the Herpes simplex virus. Herpes Simplex-1 is responsible for approximately 4 out of 5 cases. Herpes Simplex-2 is responsible for the remainder of cases. The virus causes fluid-filled blisters inside the mouth, on the tongue or lips. There is extreme redness of the infected area, and the patient may experience pain, burning and tingling. There may be difficulty in eating. There may also be fever and muscle-aches.

The herpes simplex virus affects only humans. Oral Herpes can affect people at any age.
Oral Herpes can be contracted by touching infected saliva, mucous membranes, or skin. It is often transmitted by kissing an infected person or sharing dishes, towels, or razor-blades. The virus is highly contagious, and may spread even when there is no visible lesion, during the viral shedding stage.
